More than 50 protesters are on trial in Peru after participating to a demonstration against some laws emitted to comply with a trade agreement between Peru and the US. The demonstration was initially peaceful but it became a fight when the police tried to clear a highway block and started shooting at the protesters. 10 police officers and 10 civilians were killed in the conflict, more than 200 were injured.
“So far only protesters have been brought to trial” said Amnesty International, and added that “little progress has been made to determine the responsibility of the security forces. Likewise, no progress has been made to investigate the political authorities who gave the orders to launch the police operation”.
